“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” - James 4:8
Life gets busy. Between work, responsibilities, and the never-ending demands of daily life, it’s easy for our relationship with God to take a backseat. Maybe you’ve felt distant from Him lately—prayer feels routine, your Bible is gathering dust, and spiritual hunger has been replaced with exhaustion.
If this sounds familiar, take heart. Every believer experiences seasons of spiritual dryness. But here’s the good news: God hasn’t moved. He’s still inviting you closer, ready to meet you exactly where you are.
No matter what season you’re in, you can reignite your passion for God, hear His voice more clearly, and experience His presence in a deeper way.
Here are 5 practical ways to draw closer to Him today.
1. Make Time for God Daily—Even When You Don’t “Feel” It
The depth of any relationship is determined by time and intentionality. If we only connect with God when we feel like it, our spiritual life will be inconsistent and shallow.
James 4:8 reminds us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” God doesn’t force Himself into our lives—He responds to our pursuit.
Practical Step:
Start small but be consistent. Even five minutes a day in prayer or reading Scripture makes a difference.
Create a routine. Pick a time—morning, lunch break, or before bed—and commit to it.
Remember: Discipline fuels desire. Even when it feels dry at first, keep showing up. Hunger for God grows the more we seek Him.
2. Listen, Don’t Just Talk
Prayer isn’t just about talking to God—it’s also about listening to Him. Many times, we pour out our frustrations, requests, and emotions in prayer but don’t pause long enough to hear His response.
John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” If we want to hear God’s voice, we must quiet the noise and create space to listen.
Practical Step:
After praying, pause and be still. Ask, Lord, what do You want to speak to me today? and listen with an open heart.
Journal what you sense God is saying. Sometimes, clarity comes when we write.
Pay attention to how God speaks—through Scripture, an inner prompting, godly counsel, or even the quiet peace in your spirit.
3. Surrender Control: Trusting Him in the Unknown
One of the biggest barriers to a deeper relationship with God is our own need for control. We want answers, security, and guarantees, but faith requires trusting Him even when we don’t understand.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Practical Step:
Identify one area of your life where you struggle to trust God. Write it down.
Pray, “Lord, I release this to You. Help me trust Your plan, even when I don’t see it yet.”
Remind yourself daily: God’s plans are greater than your understanding.
The more we let go of control, the closer we walk in step with Him.
4. Put Faith into Action
Spiritual growth doesn’t just happen in prayer closets and church services—it happens when we live out our faith. If we want to experience God in a deeper way, we have to apply His Word in real life.
James 1:22 challenges us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
Practical Step:
Obey what you already know. Has God put something on your heart—serving, forgiving, stepping out in faith—but you’ve been hesitant? Take action.
Look for opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Love, serve, and extend grace to those around you.
Faith grows through experience. The more we act on what we believe, the more real God becomes in our daily lives.
5. Worship as a Lifestyle
Worship isn’t just about singing on Sunday mornings—it’s a daily posture of the heart. When we worship, we shift our focus from problems to praise, from worries to wonder.
Psalm 100:2 says, “Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.” Worship invites God’s presence into our daily lives.
Practical Step:
Play worship music throughout your day—while driving, cooking, or getting ready in the morning.
Keep a gratitude journal. Each day, write three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude is an act of worship.
Shift your focus: Instead of saying, “God, I need…” try saying, “God, You are…” and praise Him for who He is.
A life of worship keeps our hearts connected to God—no matter what season we’re in.
A Word of Encouragement: God Is Closer Than You Think
If you’ve been feeling distant from God, don’t let guilt or discouragement hold you back. He is not far away—He is right here, waiting for you to draw near.
You don’t have to “fix” yourself before coming to Him. You don’t have to figure everything out. You just have to start.
Whether it’s five minutes in prayer, a step of faith, or a simple act of worship—God sees every effort you make to seek Him. And when you do, He promises to meet you there.
This is your season to go deeper. One step at a time, one prayer at a time, one moment at a time—keep drawing near.
