Breaking Free from the Past

Recognizing Emotional Disruptions

Have you ever felt a sudden rush of emotions—like fear, anxiety, or sadness—that seemed to come out of nowhere? Maybe it was the smell of a familiar scent, the sound of a certain song, or the sight of a specific place. These moments are called triggers. Triggers are powerful reminders of past experiences, often tied to unresolved pain or trauma. They can feel overwhelming, but they also present an opportunity to recognize what still needs healing.

The good news? Healing is possible. God has not called us to live in bondage to our past, but to walk in freedom and peace. As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” When we combine our faith with practical tools, we can overcome these triggers and step into the wholeness God desires for us.

What Can Trigger You?

Triggers can vary from person to person, but here are some common examples that might stir up difficult emotions or memories:

  • The anniversary of a loss or traumatic event

  • Frightening news or overwhelming current events

  • Feeling overloaded or overwhelmed

  • Conflict or tension within the family

  • The end of a significant relationship

  • Spending too much time alone

  • Criticism, judgment, or teasing

  • Financial stress or receiving an unexpected bill

  • Physical illness or injury

  • Sexual harassment or any form of mistreatment

  • Being yelled at or exposed to aggression

  • Loud, jarring noises or chaotic environments

  • Being in large crowds or unfamiliar places

  • Seeing or encountering someone who has hurt you

  • Smells, tastes, or sounds tied to painful memories

These triggers may seem small or insignificant to others, but they can carry significant weight for you. If they frequently disrupt your peace, they may point to unresolved trauma that requires attention.

Trauma: A Deeper Look

Trauma is complex. Sometimes it’s tied to a clear and identifiable event, like a loss or an accident. Other times, it’s buried beneath feelings of anxiety, anger, or depression, with no obvious cause. The event that caused it might have happened last week—or decades ago—but its effects can still linger.

Unresolved trauma doesn’t go away on its own. It often surfaces through triggers, leaving us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or even powerless. But here’s the truth: God doesn’t want us to live in fear or captivity. He calls us to live in freedom, healing, and hope.

Combining Faith with Practical Tools

If you’ve been struggling with triggers or unresolved trauma, I want to encourage you with this: healing is within your reach. Scripture teaches us the power of renewal and transformation. Romans 12:2 reminds us to, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” God invites us to allow His truth to shape and heal us, but He also equips us with tools to walk out that healing practically.

While faith is our foundation, professional guidance can provide you with tools and strategies to regain control and manage your triggers. Combining faith and practical tools empowers you to process trauma, set healthy boundaries, and experience the freedom that Christ offers.

Encouragement for Your Journey

You don’t have to live in the shadows of your past. With faith in God, intentional steps, and a willingness to heal, you can overcome the grip of triggers and trauma. God’s Word promises that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6). Lean into His presence and His promises as you take steps toward healing.

If you’re ready to begin this journey, don’t wait. You are not alone in this process, and with the right support, you can move forward into a life of peace, freedom, and hope.
